A power inverter for car use is sized by its continuous watt rating, not the peak number on the box, and the socket you plug it into caps that rating first. A lighter-socket unit tops out around 300 W continuous. Anything above that clamps to the battery.
Every figure below comes from a manufacturer spec page, a standards body or Health Canada. Nothing was bench tested.
Continuous watts vs peak watts
Manufacturers print two numbers. BESTEK lists its 300 W unit as 300 W rated, 350 W max and 700 W peak. Energizer’s ENK1500 is 1500 W continuous and 3000 W peak.
Peak covers a motor’s start-up surge. The DonRowe inverter FAQ puts a fridge or pump start-up at 3 to 7 times its running load, and says to buy 10 to 20 percent above your total continuous draw.

Why modified sine wave damages some electronics
A modified sine wave inverter outputs a stepped square wave. A pure sine unit outputs the smooth curve your wall outlet delivers, and BESTEK charges more for it at the same 300 W.
DonRowe lists what the stepped wave fails on: laser printers, some laptop power supplies, variable-speed power tools, some cordless-tool chargers, and furnaces with microprocessor control.
Pure sine costs weight and money, not function. The Samlex PST-1500-12, certified to UL and CSA standards, weighs 7.1 kg. A CPAP machine or a laptop is the use case that justifies it.
Three inverter classes, side by side
| Model | Continuous | Peak | Wave | Connection | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BESTEK 300 W | 300 W | 700 W | Modified or pure | Lighter socket, 40 A internal fuse | Socket fuse limits real output |
| Energizer ENK1500 | 1500 W | 3000 W | Modified | Battery, 2 gauge cables | Not for sensitive electronics |
| Samlex PST-1500-12 | 1500 W | 3000 W | Pure sine | Hardwire or GFCI outlets | 7.1 kg, premium price |

What burns out first
The vehicle’s socket fuse goes first. Erayak’s socket guide gives the DC math: a 10 A outlet is about 120 W, a 15 A outlet about 180 W, a 20 A outlet about 240 W, before conversion losses. Your owner’s manual states your socket’s fuse rating.
Next is the inverter’s own fuse, then its low-voltage cutoff. Samlex specifies a 10.7 to 16.5 V input window with low-battery shutdown. BESTEK’s manual notes the unit still draws from the battery when switched on with nothing plugged in, which is how a parked car ends up needing one of the battery jump starters rated by peak amps.
Last is the appliance. Health Canada’s December 2025 recall of the Craftsman V20 150 W inverter cites inconsistent output and a fire hazard, because the unit did not meet CSA C22.2 No. 107.1, Canada’s power conversion standard.
Matching the inverter to your alternator
DonRowe’s conversion is AC watts divided by 12, times 1.1, equals DC amps. A 1000 W continuous load needs about 91 A from the alternator to break even.
Alternators do not deliver their rating at idle. Balmar’s output curves show a 100 A model producing 21 A at 750 engine rpm and 83 A at 1000 rpm cold, 70 A hot. Idling to run a 1500 W inverter drains the battery. A deep cycle marine battery as a second bank, topped up by one of the solar battery chargers that trickle or maintain, is the fix for long parked runtimes.
Power inverter for car questions
Can I run a 1000 W inverter from the cigarette lighter?
No. A 20 A socket delivers roughly 240 W of DC before losses, per Erayak. Above the 300 W class you need battery clamps or a fused hardwired circuit.
Will a modified sine wave inverter hurt my laptop?
DonRowe says some laptop power supplies will not run reliably on modified sine and advises checking with the maker. Pure sine removes the question.
Does a Canadian inverter need a CSA mark?
The Craftsman recall was issued because the unit failed CSA C22.2 No. 107.1. A CSA, cUL or cETL mark shows the inverter was tested to that standard.
