A solar battery charger keeps a healthy 12V battery topped up while a vehicle sits, and not much more. Trickle panel or maintainer comes down to one part: the charge controller.
Skip it and you are trusting a small wattage not to overcharge the battery.
Trickle panel or maintainer: the controller is the whole difference
A bare panel with a blocking diode is a trickle charger. Current flows whenever light hits the cells; the diode only stops the battery draining back through the panel at night, per Battery Tender’s solar guide.
Canadian Tire’s Coleman 20W listing requires it be “used in tandem with a charge controller to prevent the 12 Volt battery from overcharging (not included).”
A maintainer adds a controller that reads battery voltage and drops to float once the battery is full.
Battery Tender calls its panels “the only panels available with a built-in charge controller to prevent overcharging” on its 5W product page.
Why a 5 watt panel is undersized for a modern car
Battery Tender’s drain guide puts normal parasitic draw, the current parked-car modules keep pulling, at 20 to 50 mA, and calls 75 to 100 mA abnormal.
Run 50 mA around the clock and 1.2 Ah is gone each day, by simple arithmetic.
Discover Battery’s storage guide puts AGM and gel self-discharge at 3 to 4% a month at 20 C, roughly 1.8 to 2.4 Ah a month on a 60 Ah battery.
Parasitic draw alone can run more than ten times the loss maintainers are marketed against.
Battery Tender rates a 5W panel at approximately 350 mA in full sun, so replacing 1.2 Ah takes about 3.4 hours of it. That is before the same guide’s 50 to 60% planning figure and 10 to 20% loss through window glass.
One cloudy week erases the margin.

Three of the six were unbuyable when checked, and only three ship with a controller. Keep a battery jump starter in the trunk regardless.

Panel ratings come from “a constant, standard level of light” and a steady cell temperature, per the US Department of Energy. A parked car offers neither.
Its radiation primer adds that Denver, near 40 N, gets nearly three times more solar energy in June than December, and thick cloud can cut direct beam radiation by 100%. Every Canadian city sits north of Denver.
Battery Tender says aim the panel at 90 degrees to the sun; a 20% shaded panel may deliver only 20 to 30% of its rating.

Can a solar battery charger revive a dead battery?
No. Battery Tender describes maintainers as built to offset self-discharge, “not intended to recharge a significantly depleted battery.”
Do I need a charge controller with a small panel?
Makers disagree. Canadian Tire requires one for its 20W Coleman panel, and Battery Tender warns that overcharging is possible at higher wattages without one.
Will a solar maintainer work on a lithium battery?
Only if the maker says so. Battery Tender states its lead-acid chargers “should not be used on lithium batteries without a compatible lithium charge controller.”
