Solar panels generate electricity because sunlight knocks electrons loose inside a silicon semiconductor. The cell is built so those freed electrons travel only one way, and that flow is direct current. An inverter converts it into the alternating current your outlets use.

Sunlight moves electrons inside the silicon

The U.S. Department of Energy describes silicon as a semiconductor: it conducts electricity only when energy is supplied. Sunlight supplies it.

Light hits the cell, gets absorbed, and hands its energy to electrons. Other layers pull that current out, and it leaves through the thin grid-like metal lines printed across the face of any panel.

Silicon starts as sand, refined chemically into crystalline form before it conducts usefully. Cells strung together make a module, and modules make the array on your roof.

Panels look almost black for a reason. Untreated silicon reflects back more than 30 percent of the light landing on it, so manufacturers add anti-reflection coatings and texture the surface.

A darker cell kept more photons. If the materials science interests you, the hunt for room-temperature superconductors chases the opposite problem: moving current with no resistance at all.

The inverter translates DC into house current

Everything up to this point is DC. Your fridge, furnace fan and laptop charger run on AC, so an inverter sits between the array and your electrical panel.

You get one of two arrangements. A single string inverter handles the whole array, costs less, and is easier to service. Microinverters mount on each module instead.

The difference shows up in shade. With microinverters every panel works independently, which matters when a chimney or a neighbour’s maple crosses the roof by mid-afternoon.

Budget for a replacement either way. DOE expects an inverter to need swapping at least once across the 25-year life of an array.

Before you size anything, work out what your house actually draws. A smart plug with energy monitoring on your heaviest appliances gives you real numbers instead of a salesperson’s estimate.

Cold Canadian air helps, short days do not

Heat is the enemy, not cold. DOE notes that solar cells generally work best at low temperatures, because a hotter cell gains a little current but loses considerably more voltage.

A bright, bitter February morning on the Prairies puts the panel close to ideal operating conditions. The glass does not care that you are scraping the car.

Why are most solar panels black?
