A deep cycle marine battery is built to be drained and recharged repeatedly, not just to crank an engine once. The two dominant options today are AGM lead-acid and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4).

The number that separates them is depth of discharge: how much of the rated capacity you can actually use before you damage the battery.

AGM vs lithium: what actually changes at the battery bank

Those numbers explain the price gap. Lithium costs more per amp-hour up front but delivers close to double the usable energy per rated Ah, at roughly a third less weight, and it does not need a second battery just for cranking.

Depth of discharge is the number that decides battery life

AGM and other lead-acid chemistries are typically limited to about 50% depth of discharge before cycle life drops sharply. Run one down further on a regular basis and it will not hit the reserve capacity printed on the box for long.

LiFePO4 cells tolerate a full discharge without that penalty, which is why Battle Born rates its usable DoD at 100%.

The catch is that a voltage reading alone will not tell you how deep you actually went, especially on AGM.

A proper load test compared against a simple voltage reading shows the difference between a battery that still holds its rated capacity and one that only looks fine at rest.

Group size, weight, and cold weather behaviour

Group size still matters more than chemistry when you shop. The BB10012 above fits a Group 27 or 31 tray, while the D34M carries the BCI Group 34 footprint its model number refers to. Check the tray before assuming a straight swap.

The weight difference matters more on smaller boats and on trailers, where every pound moves the trim, and lithium options exist in most common group sizes including 27 and 31.

Cold is where lithium needs the most respect. Most LiFePO4 packs carry a built-in battery management system that will not allow charging below freezing, cutting the bank off entirely until it warms up.

AGM has no such cutoff, which is one reason it still shows up as the starting battery of choice in cold weather. Lead-acid chemistry behaves differently from lithium once temperatures drop.

Charging and off-season storage
