A car dash cam records in short looped clips and overwrites the oldest footage once its card fills. Four numbers decide whether yours still works in two years: how it holds power, its temperature ceiling, its loop length, and the endurance rating of its card.

Parking mode keeps recording after the ignition is off. That power comes from the vehicle battery through a hardwire kit, which is why every serious kit ships with a low-voltage cutoff.

Heat ends more dash cams than collisions do

Supercapacitor models carry no battery. VIOFO’s A229 Plus specification table lists “NO Battery, built-in Super Capacitor”, rated -20°C to 65°C operating and -20°C to 70°C in storage.

Battery models carry a second, tighter figure. Garmin’s manual for the Dash Cam 47, 57 and 67W gives an operating range of -20° to 60°C and a charging range of only 0° to 45°C.

A cabin above 45°C sits inside the operating window and outside the charging window, so the camera runs while refusing to top up its own cell.

Supercapacitors carry a cost too. They store just enough to close the file currently open, so cut the cable and the camera records nothing on its own. Temperature ceilings bite the same way on solar security cameras through winter.

Loop recording length is a filing decision, not a quality setting

Loop recording cuts footage into fixed-length files and deletes the oldest when space runs out. The A229 Plus spec table offers off, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 minute clips.

Short clips are easier to isolate and hand to an insurer. Long clips leave fewer files to sort, but one corrupted file costs ten minutes of road instead of one.

Setting the loop to off has a late consequence. The card fills, recording stops, and you own a camera that captured the week before the incident.

The memory card wears out long before the camera does

Continuous recording is the harshest workload consumer flash sees. SanDisk rates its High Endurance microSD line for up to 40,000 recording hours, and its MAX ENDURANCE line for up to 120,000 hours, which it describes as over 13 years.

VIOFO’s card guidance calls 64GB the minimum, 128GB or 256GB the conservative pick, and U3 necessary for 4K. It also names the Samsung EVO as a card it does not recommend.

Capacity and lifespan are separate specs. A large card with no endurance rating fails quietly, at the moment you need the footage. The same continuous-write maths governs wired outdoor security cameras.
