Solar Security Cameras: Winter Uptime and Panel Sizing

A solar powered security camera survives a Canadian winter only if the panel harvests enough in December and the battery is warm enough to accept the charge. Spec sheets from Reolink, Ring and Arlo settle the second point: all three stop charging below 0°C, whatever the panel size.

The 0°C rule that overrides panel wattage

Reolink lists a charging range of 0°C to 45°C for its solar panels and says charging may temporarily stop below zero to protect the lithium battery (Reolink Support). Ring gives the same 0°C to 45°C window (Ring Help).

Arlo is blunter. Its batteries “do not charge at temperatures below freezing, even if your camera is plugged into AC power or using an Arlo Solar Panel” (Arlo Support).

So on a -12°C day the camera runs on whatever it banked during the last thaw. A spot where midday sun warms the camera body matters as much as panel size.

The manufacturers’ own workaround is manual. Ring tells you to bring the camera indoors and charge it over USB during a cold spell (Ring Help), and Arlo suggests swapping in a spare battery kept warm inside. Reolink says charging resumes on its own once the cell is back above zero.

Operating floor and charging floor are different numbers

The Reolink Argus 3 Pro carries a 6000 mAh battery, an IP65 rating and an operating range of -10°C to 55°C (Reolink). Arlo rates its Pro, Ultra and Essential wire-free cameras to -20°C.

The eufy SoloCam S340 lists -20°C to 50°C (eufy). Ring says its battery devices operate between -20°C and 50°C (Ring Help).

That -10°C floor is the Argus 3 Pro’s real weakness on the Prairies and across most of Quebec; Reolink’s own FAQ says not to use it below that. The offset is the 6 W Solar Panel 2S, which Reolink rates to power the camera directly down to -20°C, bypassing the frozen battery.

Arlo also rates the panel itself: the Arlo Solar Panel has a minimum operating temperature of 0°C, twenty degrees above the cameras it feeds. IP65 comes from IEC 60529, a standard about keeping solids and water out of an enclosure (IEC). It says nothing about cold.

December harvest by city, and the panel size that follows

Natural Resources Canada publishes monthly photovoltaic potential for over 3,500 municipalities, in kWh per kW of panel, at six tilt angles (NRCan open dataset). Read it as watt-hours per month per watt of panel.

Units: kWh per kWp per month, NRCan municipal database, south-facing orientations. NRCan notes the monthly values are indicative and ignore snowfall and temperature.

A panel lying flat in Toronto drops from 137 in June to 28 in December, roughly a fifth. In every city listed, a near-vertical panel on a wall out-yields the textbook latitude tilt in December, because the sun sits low and snow slides off upright glass.

Reolink sells 3 W, 6 W and 12 W panels. eufy ships the S340 with a removable 2.2 W panel and claims two hours of direct sun a day keeps it powered.

Ring’s barrel-connector camera panel is 2.4 W (Ring Help). Ring wants three to four hours of direct sun daily and holds off charging until the battery falls under 90%.

Apply Toronto’s December figure of 51 Wh per watt per month: a 6 W panel at latitude tilt averages about 10 Wh a day, a 2.2 W panel about 3.7 Wh. NRCan derives these with a 0.75 performance ratio for grid-tied systems, so treat them as a ceiling.

No brand publishes a daily watt-hour draw for its cameras, so no honest sizing formula exists. Buy the largest panel the camera’s port accepts and mount it near vertical, facing south. If charging nothing on sub-zero days bothers you, a wired PoE outdoor camera sidesteps the battery question.
