Wi-Fi 6E is worth it for gaming only in a crowded building, and only if your gaming device actually has a 6 GHz radio. Everywhere else, Wi-Fi 6 does the same job for less.
The upgrade is often sold as raw speed. For gaming, speed was never the problem.
6E is not a faster protocol, it is a new band
Wi-Fi 6E runs the same Wi-Fi 6 technology on an additional 6 GHz band. The rules, the efficiency features, and the theoretical throughput are unchanged.
What changes is who else is on the air with you. The 6 GHz band is newer, so far fewer devices and neighbouring networks are sitting in it.
That is the whole pitch, and for gaming it is a better pitch than it sounds.
Gaming cares about jitter, not bandwidth
An online match uses a small, steady trickle of data. A modern shooter needs a fraction of what a 4K stream consumes.
What ruins a match is inconsistency. A latency spike when the microwave runs or when six neighbouring networks compete on the same channel is what you feel as rubber-banding.
An empty band mostly removes that competition. That is why 6E can help even though your average speed barely moves.
The catch is range
Higher frequencies carry less well through solid objects. A 6 GHz signal is strong in the same room and weakens quickly through walls and floors.
In a one-bedroom apartment with the router in sight, 6E is excellent. Two walls and a staircase away, your 5 GHz connection may hold up better.
If your connection already drops rather than merely slows, the band is not your issue. Work through the causes behind Wi-Fi that keeps disconnecting before spending anything.
Check your device before your router
A 6E router does nothing for a client that cannot see 6 GHz. Your phone might support it while your gaming PC does not.
Consoles are the common disappointment here. Current mainstream consoles do not have 6 GHz radios, so a 6E router leaves them exactly where they were.
Desktop PCs are the easy fix, since a 6E network card costs far less than a router. Check the spec sheet for your specific adapter rather than assuming.
Ethernet still beats both
If a cable can reach, use the cable. Wired removes airtime contention entirely and gives you the most consistent latency available.

Who should actually upgrade
Buy 6E if you live in a dense apartment block, your PC has or can take a 6 GHz adapter, and the router sits in the same room as you play.
Stay on Wi-Fi 6 if you are in a house with few neighbouring networks, your devices are older, or you game on a console.
Wi-Fi 7 also uses 6 GHz and adds features that mainly benefit very busy networks. The same device-support question applies to it first.
Does Wi-Fi 6E lower your ping?
It can reduce spikes caused by congestion, which is what most players notice. It does not shorten the distance to the game server, so your baseline ping stays the same.
Can a Wi-Fi 6 device connect to a 6E router?
Yes. A 6E router still broadcasts 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, so older devices connect normally and simply miss the 6 GHz band.
Is 6E worth it if my internet plan is slow?
Rarely. If your plan is the bottleneck, a new band will not raise your ceiling. It can still smooth congestion in a busy building.
