Repeat WiFi drops almost always trace to one of four causes: your adapter powering its own radio down, the router bouncing you between bands, a radar event closing your 5 GHz channel, or plain congestion. Rebooting the router fixes none of them permanently.
Work through them in that order. The first one alone accounts for a huge share of laptop and mini PC complaints.
Stop Windows from switching off your adapter
Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click your wireless adapter and choose Properties.
On the Power Management tab, clear the box that allows the computer to turn off the device to save power. This setting alone causes drops that look completely random, usually after a few idle minutes.
Then open the Advanced tab. If your adapter exposes a power saving or transmit power value, set it to maximum performance rather than balanced.
Laptops add a second layer through the Windows power plan. Set the wireless adapter setting there to maximum performance while plugged in.
Band steering is guessing, and sometimes wrong
Most routers publish 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name and decide for you. When the call is marginal, your adapter bounces between them repeatedly.
Split them into two named networks temporarily and join the 5 GHz one directly. If the drops stop, band steering was the culprit, not your hardware.
Adapters from Intel and others expose a roaming aggressiveness value in the Advanced tab. If your desktop sits still and keeps hopping to a weaker access point, lower it.
The DFS radar drop nobody mentions
Generic guides skip this one entirely, and it explains the most baffling pattern of all.
Upper 5 GHz channels are shared with radar under rules called Dynamic Frequency Selection. If your router detects a radar pulse from weather or aviation equipment, it must vacate that channel immediately.
Everything on 5 GHz drops for up to a minute while it moves. Homes near an airport or weather station can see this several times a day.
Log into the router, find the 5 GHz channel setting, and pin it to a low non-DFS channel instead of automatic. Regional numbering varies, so pick from the lowest group offered.
Drop your channel width to 80 MHz
A 160 MHz channel sounds like free speed. In practice it almost always overlaps DFS territory and tolerates interference badly.
Setting 80 MHz costs peak throughput you were probably never reaching. Stability improves noticeably in dense buildings where neighbouring networks overlap.

Confirming it is the router, not your machine
Watch a second device during a drop. If everything loses connection together, stop troubleshooting the PC.
Check the router’s system log next. Repeated DHCP lease renewals or deauthentication entries point at the router; a clean log during a drop points back at the client.
Heat is underrated. A router that behaves for hours then starts dropping, especially one in a cabinet, is likely throttling itself.

Why does my WiFi disconnect only at night?
Two usual explanations. Neighbouring networks get busier in the evening, and some routers run a scheduled reboot or firmware check overnight. Check the router’s scheduling page before assuming interference.
Does updating the WiFi driver actually help?
Often yes, but get it from the adapter manufacturer rather than Windows Update, which ships older validated builds. Note your current version first so you can roll back.
Would a mesh system fix constant disconnects?
Only if weak coverage is the real cause. Mesh hardware makes power management, DFS and driver problems no better, and adding nodes can increase band hopping.
