Electric Scooters for Adults: What Range Claims Leave Out

The range number on an adult electric scooter is a laboratory result, not a commute. Segway’s footnote for the MAX G2 E says the figure was measured with a full battery, a 75 kg load, 25°C ambient and an average 16 km/h on pavement.

Change one input and the number moves. Read the headline range as a ceiling, then work down the sheet.

The manufacturer publishes the range twice

Segway lists two range figures for the same machine. The MAX G2 E tech specs show roughly 70 km at 15 km/h, and roughly 50 km at the scooter’s 25 km/h top speed.

That is a 20 km penalty for riding it at the speed it advertises. Both rows sit in the same table. Only the larger reaches the box.

Watt-hours compare across brands, kilometres do not

Battery energy is the spec that survives translation between manufacturers. Segway gives the MAX G2 E 551 Wh at 36 V.

Apollo, based in Montreal, builds the City Pro around a 48V 20Ah pack, roughly 960 Wh. Apollo claims up to 69 km. Segway claims up to 70 km.

One gets there with about 74 percent more stored energy. Neither is lying. They ran different protocols on scooters of different weight and top speed.

Apollo’s own fine print says range varies with rider weight, terrain, weather and riding style.

Cold storage is really a charging restriction

Segway’s page carries an instruction most buyers scroll past. Store the scooter above -10°C, and if it has sat below 0°C, warm it above 5°C before plugging it in.

In a Canadian winter that turns an unheated garage into a problem. The scooter is not broken, it just cannot charge on your schedule.

The legal specs outrank the range spec

Ontario’s electric kick-scooter pilot regulation defines the vehicle numerically: a motor not exceeding 500 W, a maximum speed of 24 km/h, an unladen weight of 45 kg or less including the battery, and wheels no more than 430 mm across.

Operators must be at least 16.

Hold the catalogue against that. Apollo lists the Phantom 2.0 Stellar at 107 lbs, about 48.5 kg, and up to 85 km/h. Neither figure fits.

It also demands a stop within nine metres from 24 km/h on level pavement, and permits riding only where a municipal by-law allows it.

Ask what the certification covers

ANSI/CAN/UL 2272 covers electrical drive trains and battery systems in personal e-mobility devices. UL Solutions certifies to it, and Apollo describes the City Pro pack as UL certified.

A certified cell, a certified pack and a certified drive train are different claims. Ask which one a listing means.

How much range do you lose at top speed?

On Segway’s published MAX G2 E table, about 20 km. It is rated near 70 km at 15 km/h and near 50 km at its 25 km/h maximum, close to a 29 percent drop.

Does a bigger battery always mean more range?

No. Apollo’s City Pro carries roughly 960 Wh against the MAX G2 E’s 551 Wh, yet both claim about 70 km. Weight, top speed and test method absorb the gap.

Can you ride an adult electric scooter anywhere in Ontario?

No. The pilot regulation caps motor power, speed, weight and wheel size, and riding is allowed only where a municipal by-law permits it.
