For gaming, put the operating system and your active games on an SSD and keep a hard drive only for bulk storage. An SSD will not raise your frame rate, but it removes loading screens and the traversal stutter that ruins open-world games.
That split is the whole answer. The rest is deciding how much SSD you need and what an HDD is still worth in a Canadian build.
What storage actually changes while you play
Loading is the obvious one. A mechanical drive has to physically move a head to reach data, and modern games pull thousands of small scattered files during a level load.
Texture streaming is the less obvious one. Open-world titles load assets continuously as you move, and a hard drive that cannot keep up produces late-appearing textures and brief freezes.
Frame rate is a different problem entirely. That number is set by your GPU and CPU, which is why boosting FPS without new hardware comes down to settings rather than drives.
Where a hard drive still earns its place
Cost per terabyte is the one metric where mechanical drives still win outright, and that matters if your library runs into dozens of installed titles.
Use one for games you are not currently playing, recorded gameplay, and local backups. Moving a game back to the SSD before a session takes minutes and costs nothing.
What has changed is the floor. A growing number of releases list an SSD in their minimum requirements, and Microsoft’s DirectStorage path assumes an NVMe drive, so a hard drive is no longer a safe home for anything current.
SATA or NVMe, and how much the gap matters
The jump from a hard drive to any SSD is enormous. The jump from a SATA SSD to a Gen 4 NVMe drive is real but far smaller in practice, because most games do not saturate the interface.
Buy NVMe if your motherboard has a free M.2 slot, since prices sit close together and the drive frees a cable. Keep a SATA SSD if you are reusing parts.
Gen 5 drives run hot and demand serious cooling for gains you will struggle to notice in a game. Spend that money on capacity instead.
The part Canadian builders get wrong
Storage pricing in Canada does not track American sale prices, and a US listing that looks cheap often loses its advantage once shipping, exchange and duty land on it.
Buying domestically also keeps the warranty simple. Returning a failed drive to a Canadian retailer is far less painful than shipping it across the border at your own cost.
Watch the retailer sale cycles instead of chasing cross-border deals. Capacity per dollar swings more between sales than between comparable drive models.
If you already own both drives
Install Windows and your two or three current games on the SSD. Everything else goes on the hard drive until you want to play it.
Leave roughly ten to fifteen percent of the SSD free, because a drive filled to the brim slows down.

Will an SSD increase my FPS?
Not meaningfully. It improves loading, streaming and stutter. To measure what your graphics card is actually doing, run a GPU benchmark instead.
Is a Gen 5 NVMe drive worth it for gaming?
Not for most builders. The extra bandwidth shows up in synthetic tests far more than in games, and the heat and cost are real.
Can I still install games on a hard drive?
Older and smaller titles run fine. Recent open-world releases often stutter badly, and some now refuse to list a hard drive as supported at all.
