A commercial grade dehumidifier is rated at two different conditions, and on the same machine those two numbers can sit nearly 100 pints per day apart. Working out which one applies to your space is most of the buying decision.
Restoration units publish an AHAM figure and a saturation figure. Home units are measured elsewhere entirely, so comparing on pints alone lands you in the wrong class of machine.
The two pint ratings on every commercial spec sheet
The AHAM number is taken at 80 degrees F and 60 percent relative humidity. The saturation number is taken at 90 degrees F and 90 percent, close to a flooded room on day one.
Legend Brands rates the Dri-Eaz LGR 7000XLi at 130 pints per day at AHAM and 235 at saturation. That is an 81 percent spread on a single unit.
AlorAir lists the Storm LGR Extreme at 85 pints at AHAM and 180 at saturation. Retail listings tend to lead with the saturation figure, so the machine reads larger than it will behave in a cool basement.
Why a home unit’s pint rating does not compare
The US Department of Energy corrects portable dehumidifier capacity to 65 degrees F and 60 percent relative humidity, and whole home units to 73 degrees F. Neither matches the 80 degree AHAM condition printed on a restoration unit.
A 50 pint home dehumidifier and a 130 pint commercial one are three separate test conditions apart. It is the same trick behind battery heaters that miss their advertised output, where the rating condition does the marketing.
Duty cycle and the temperature floor
Commercial units run continuously to a drain hose instead of a bucket. That is the practical meaning of duty cycle here, and it explains the long cords and the pump options.
Energy Star notes that refrigerant dehumidifiers lose effectiveness below 65 degrees F, with the compressor cycling on and off without pulling water out of the air.
This is where the commercial machines separate. Legend Brands rates the 7000XLi to 33 degrees F and AlorAir rates the LGR Extreme to 33.8 degrees F, both under the point where a home unit stalls.
LGR stands for low grain refrigerant. Legend Brands describes its crossflow design as optimising removal in low grain conditions, the state a room reaches once the easy water is gone.

The 7000XLi buys its capacity with mass. At 106 pounds it is a two person carry up a basement stair, and it pulls 8.8 amps at 115 volts.
The Storm LGR Extreme is 64.3 pounds and easier to move, but its AHAM rating sits 45 pints lower. On a large loss you will want two, and two machines means two circuits.
The circuit you plug it into
Two 7000XLi units on one 15 amp circuit is 17.6 amps of draw, past the breaker before a single air mover is plugged in. Crews spread machines across circuits for that reason.
It is the same arithmetic behind wall mounted heater wiring and clearances. Check your panel first.
Running cost follows draw, using the same method as space heater watts against room size.
Commercial dehumidifier questions
Is a commercial grade dehumidifier worth it for a basement?
Only if the basement runs cool. A home unit stalls below 65 degrees F, while both units above are rated to roughly 33 degrees F, so the advantage only appears in an unheated space.
Which pint rating should I size from?
Size from the AHAM figure. The saturation number describes a flooded room at 90 degrees F and 90 percent humidity, a condition your space leaves within days.
Do these units need a floor drain?
They need somewhere for continuous discharge. Gravity to a floor drain is simplest, and models such as the Storm LGR Extreme ship with a built in pump for lifting to a sink.
